As Shell Ventures grows its team in the US, we are recruiting a Venture Principal to join our Boston team. This is an exciting role for an experienced venture investment, start up, (corporate) innovation or M&A/corporate finance professional to support investment in start-ups in the Renewable Energy, Mobility, Resources & Environment, and IT/Digital arenas. The Venture Principal will support Shell Ventures Partners (and over time have their own responsibility) on deal sourcing, preparing and presenting the investment case, executing deals and negotiating with counterparties towards delivery. The role may also offer the opportunity for post-investment monitoring and implementation as observer on the Board of Directors of SV portfolio companies.

What Is The Role

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

 

  • Source investment opportunities through your network that have the potential to transform the energy, mobility and/or carbon markets
  • Lead the commercial and competitive analysis, including detailed landscaping of the appropriate market sub-segment(s) and outlining relevant comparable companies as well as transactions
  • Support the development of the investment case, including assessment of the value of the solution to Shell in close collaboration with Shell businesses and technology groups
  • Help structure and negotiate the financial and governance terms of the SV investment, including with other co-investors
  • Lead (virtual) Shell deal teams in performing the commercial and/or technical part of the due diligence, including involving representatives from Shell businesses and R&D where relevant
  • Validate and help structure the implementation of appropriate cooperation opportunities (e.g. joint development agreements, technology licensing, pilot projects, JVs) that can accelerate the deployment of technologies, products or services in Shell operations, in close collaboration with SV’s implementation team
  • Be involved in the post-close management of investments (including follow-on investments and eventual sale or IPO divestment) and contribute to regular performance reviews of portfolio companies – in some cases there is the opportunity to have an Observer position on the Board to help guide portfolio companies to success in the various stages of their growth
  • Contribute to the creation of insightful industry and sector investment theses through analysis, collaboration with Shell business units, and engagements with external parties
  • Cultivate a close working relationship with specific business stakeholders to ensure alignment of strategy, sharing of knowledge and ongoing relevance to business groups
  • Develop and leverage your internal Shell network to source opportunities, validate strategic relevance of investments, and inform technology and business innovation strategy
  • Position and represent SV as a trusted investment partner for world-class start-ups and leading VCs
  • Be a credible and compelling spokesperson for SV and Shell by being present and in some cases speak at conferences, author thought-pieces, host events, engage with media, etc.

 

What We Need From You

 

  • You must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • Candidate must have 8-10 (eight to ten) years of professional experience with track record in venture capital, incubation, M&A/Corporate Finance, Business Development or start-up management in the Renewable Energy, Mobility, Environmental or IT/Digital space
  • University degree in Economics, Finance, Business Administration, IT, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or related fields is required
  • Knowledge of all aspects of VC deal making (from due diligence to deal structuring, key terms, key elements of legal documentation and post-close deal management)
  • Strong commercial acumen and experience in supporting VC deals
  • Natural curiosity, creative and critical thinker with learner mindset
  • Expertise in, and passion for, technology, innovation and/ or business model analysis and assessment
  • Solid understanding of how technology or new business models unlock new opportunities
  • Strong professional network in the core VC ecosystems in the US
  • ‘Executive presence’ and the ability to represent SV in public forums
  • Strong communicator and project manager with ability to build and maintain relationships within a complex, global corporation
  • A true “team player” with a collaborative attitude and an interest in developing talent
